6 Signs It’s Time for New Brake Pads

September 26, 2025

Your vehicle’s braking system is one of the most important parts of staying safe on the road. Among the many components involved, your brake pads take on the most wear and tear. Every time you press the brake pedal, those pads create friction against the rotors to slow your car down. Eventually, they wear thin and if you wait too long to replace them, it leads to serious safety issues and expensive repairs.

So how do you know when it’s time to get new brake pads? Watch for these six clear signs.

1. Squealing or Screeching Sounds

One of the first signs your brake pads are wearing thin is a high-pitched squealing sound when you brake. Most modern brake pads are designed with a wear indicator—a small metal tab that makes this noise when the pad has worn down past a certain point. If you hear this regularly, it’s time to schedule a brake inspection.

Squealing doesn’t always mean your brakes are about to fail, but it does mean they need attention soon. Ignoring it for too long can allow the pads to wear down completely, leading to metal-on-metal contact.

2. Grinding Noise When Braking

If you hear a deep grinding sound when you press the brake pedal, it usually means the brake pads have worn down entirely. When this happens, the metal backing of the pad is now scraping against the rotors. This not only reduces braking effectiveness but can also cause serious damage to the rotors, requiring resurfacing or even full replacement.

Driving in this condition is dangerous and can dramatically increase your stopping distance. At this point, immediate service is necessary.

3. Vibration or Pulsing in the Brake Pedal

A pulsing or vibrating brake pedal, especially when stopping from higher speeds, can be a sign of uneven wear on the brake pads or warping of the rotors. While sometimes this can happen from heat buildup or hard stops, it may also point to brake components not wearing evenly, which reduces control and increases wear over time.

If your pedal doesn’t feel smooth and steady, have it inspected.

4. Longer Stopping Distances

If your car takes longer to come to a full stop than it used to, or if it feels like you have to press harder on the brake pedal, worn brake pads might be the cause. As the pads get thinner, they lose their ability to generate consistent friction, which compromises your stopping power.

In an emergency, even a small delay in braking response can make a big difference in avoiding an accident.

5. Brake Pad Indicator Light

Many modern vehicles have a dashboard light that alerts you when your brake pads are too thin. This warning light might look like a circle with dashed lines on either side, or it might simply say “Brake.” While this light can also point to other issues within the braking system, it should never be ignored.

If the light comes on and stays on, it’s time to have your brakes inspected.

6. Visually Thin Brake Pads

If you’re comfortable inspecting your brakes through your wheel spokes, you can sometimes see the brake pads yourself. A healthy brake pad will generally have at least a quarter inch of material remaining. If the pad looks very thin or you can barely see any pad material left, it's likely time for a replacement.

For those who aren’t sure what to look for, a quick stop at our shop for a brake inspection is a safer bet.

Why Prompt Replacement Is So Important

Waiting too long to replace your brake pads doesn’t just increase your risk of brake failure. It also puts additional stress on other braking components like rotors and calipers. These parts are more expensive to replace, and the extra damage can turn a simple service into a major repair.

Driving with worn brakes also reduces your confidence behind the wheel. If your brakes aren’t responding as they should, every drive becomes more stressful and dangerous.
